| OK OK, not truly a magazine, but definitely not a blog, this is just a collection of stuff we saw here and there - whatever took our fancy at the time. Some car shows and drag meets, gigs, rusty car wrecks, and the rest. If you see anything you want to share, drop us a line and a few pics, and we'll bung 'em on the page. |

| 07 Oct 2009 HUMBER GASSER Kamikaze Kev Text & pics - Kamikaze Kev Roberts ©2009 Our new mate Kamikaze Kev sends these words and pics of his mean Humber Gasser! Hi , peeps ! My kar was a normal, quiet, innocent 1966 Humber Hawk until the Nitemares hot rod club in Essex got hold of it! It was built as a club joint effort using parts donated by various members .........I've owned it 4 years now, in that time I've replaced...er...lots In the last 2 years I have replaced: The V8 engine and gearbox; 3 out of 4 doors ( I DESPERATELY need an O.S.R door Pleaze ! ); 10 x 15 rear wheels; ultra-rare 4x15 front wheels; hood scoop; all the seats , as me bum is to big for the bucket seats fitted.... Fitted a MOON " tank to the front grille. The engine is an aluminium V8 out of a Range rover, with a Holley 4 barrel carb fitted to a rare Buick intake manifold, the gearbox is a borg-warner 35 automatic, the rear axle is the original - fitted with traction bars, which is amazing - the car used to have a 300bhp mercedes V8 fitted! The front suspension is an early ford transit beam axle - to LIFT it UPUPUPUPUP! gasser style, and disc brakes. The BEST thing about my kar is the looks I get when filling up with petrol - you expect people to look `cos its outragous...BUT... they look even more puzzled because one of the rear lights unscrews - its the petrol cap so peeps think your putting petrol in ya back lights !!!!!! Thanks, Kev! One mean gasser. Any other car owners wnat to share with the world? |

| 13 April 2009 RUST IN PIECES Waverley NZ Text & pics - Richard Anderson ©2009 Stopped here en route to the volcano, to take some pics of Dennis Latimer's great mural, and spotted a rusting pile in a back yard. It's a Vanguard 'Ute' the friendly owner told me proudly. Don't know which year, and it's way beyond help, I'm afraid.

11-13 April 2009 CARS IN THE CAPITAL Wellington NZ - TSB Bank Arena Text - Richard Anderson ©2009 Pics - Richard Anderson; Emily Anderson ©2009 Just a week after the Nostalgia Drags, we found ourselves in NZ capital Wellington to see the 'Cars in the Capital' hot rod show. Some fine cars here, too - there are certainly more than a few great cars and car-builders in New Zealand. |

| 5 April 2009 NOSTALGIA DRAGS Meremere NZ - Fram Autolite Speedway Text - Richard Anderson ©2009 Pics - Richard Anderson; Emily Anderson ©2009 As chance would have it, we happened to be passing Meremere, roughly half way between Auckland and Hamilton in North Island NZ, just in time for the Nostalgia Drags event. Organised by Bay Rodders of Tauranga, the event welcomes pre-'78s to the Meremere dragstrip for a day of race and show. Our round-the-world jaunt just happened to coincide with the 2009 event, so we went for a look-see, and we're glad we did. I can't tell you who won what, or even what the 'what' was - but man, there sure are some fine autos in New Zealand! Many thanks to the organisers, and all we met there, some very friendly folks. Special thanks to John Pugh for letting us bother him and his 1930 Ford A Roadster, and to our new friend Dale Clothier at Traditional Speed Supply. Cheers mate! I've included a link to a short movie at YouTube, by Red Shift NZ. |

4 March 2009 STRAY CATS Auckland NZ - Powerstation - 4 March 2009 Text - Richard Anderson ©2009 All photos courtesy of Monika Walter ©2009 - cheers mate! I was lucky enough to catch the Stray Cats at Brixton in Sept 08 on the British leg of their 'Farewell' Tour, and man! was it the best. A tour-de-force of punk-rockabilly, including a cover of The Clash's 'I Fought the Law' as tribute to the heady days of 1979 in London, and to Setzer's long-time pal, the much-missed Joe Strummer, and the appearance of Dave Edmunds onstage for 'The Race Is On', the original video for which is still one of the Cats' coolest appearances. However, during emotional thank-yous after the final encore, Slim Jim took a tumble and, although his pride appeared more damaged than the man, you may know that this resulted in serious injury with a fractured wrist ending the UK Tour there and then. A slow recovery and stacks of physiotherapy |
| brought Slim Jim back to the stage, and I booked tickets, 5 months and half the world away, knowing I could arrange to be in Auckland 'coincidentally' when the Cats played their only NZ date of the Farewell Tour. The gig arrived hot on the heels of a triumphant Australian Tour, and I arrived at the Powerstation, Auckland, after giving the taxi driver instructions to get there (did he learn in London or something?). Support band Labretta Suede and the Motel 6 warmed it up, then the main event. A storming set gave us 'Rumble in Brighton', 'Runaway Boys', '18 Miles from Memphis', 'Stray Cat Strut' and 'Fishnet Stockings', later and undeservedly often overlooked tracks like 'Gina' and 'Blast Off'. A cover of Ian Dury's 'Sweet Gene Vincent', and a blasting 'Rock This Town' also appeared in a set which, at 70 mins, was way too short! Let's hope the 'Farewell' Tour label is about as truthful as The Damned's same claim in 1989 - still playing live 20 years later. |

22 Nov 2008 WANDA JACKSON London UK - Brixton Hootananny Text and pic - Louise Garratt ©2009 'Elvis Gave Me The Courage to Sing Rock n Roll' Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly, returned to the UK for a gig at Brixton's Hootananny, 22nd November 2008. Wanda's career in music began when she won her own radio show in a talent competition at just 12 years old, and was subsequently spotted by a country music star of the time, Hank Thompson. After that Wanda was signed up and recorded a number of country love songs. It was after graduating from high school in the early 1950s that Wanda was to also become a rock 'n' roll artist. On a tour she met a then relatively unknown Elvis Presley, they dated - she still has his ring - and he told her about rock 'n' roll and about how it was to be the next big thing. He gave her the encouragement to try it. This proved to be a good move and Wanda added rock 'n' roll to her repertoire. |
| If you haven't heard Wanda's voice before - and if not, why not? - I couldn't describe it as a 'sweet' voice. It's a great voice with raw energy and the kind that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up on edge. Wanda's voice has loads of character, something she isn't short of. Tonight's performance shows she is still a firecracker, the French called her 'The Hurricane'. She performed Mean Mean Man, Funnel of Love, I Gotta Know, Riot in Cell Block Number 9, a medley of Elvis songs, a couple of Jerry Lee Lewis numbers and the hit 'Fujiyama Mama'..... "I been to Nagasaki, Hiroshima too. The things I did to them, baby, I can do to you!" ...that night in Brixton she did! |
